The largest expense in our life is no doubt a mortgage payment, or in other words owning a house. There are only two ways to own a great home with a low payment. The first is, if you simply pay down the loan with a chunk of money to effectively lower the balance and in turn lower your payments.
The other would be to not get locked into a large mortgage to begin with and that means building your home from scratch. Nothing, I mean nothing strikes fear into the hearts of people everywhere like the terms “remodeling” or “managing construction of my home”.
Well, have no fear.
All you have to do is hire a great general contractor or builder, right? I don’t know how many times I’ve heard horror stories about someone hiring an assumingly great builder only to talk to them months later amidst a construction nightmare. You’ve heard it a thousand times before from friends and family.
The story goes like this. You hire a builder to remodel your kitchen, they quote you a price and schedule for getting the work done. “It will only take a month,” they affectionately say. Wrong! It seems every time the project goes over budget and way over schedule.
So, if you want to avoid a nightmare, you and your partner should spend more time researching a builder than you spend picking out the tile that will go in the guest house.
The only case I’ve heard that didn’t lead to the property owners wanting to rip their hair out was my friends that hired two gentleman named Jason and Garett of Boutwell Built, a custom home builder in Ocala.
They have the credentials, they have the experience. And most importantly, they introduced my friends to other families that have used them in the past. It speaks volumes hearing from someone who is very happy with the work that a builder has done. There’s not a better endorsement than a past client raving about how a project came in on-time and on-budget.
